Ard Na Cregg Semi Final

Corinthians 24
Buccaneers 9

Match Report by Dave Grealish

Playing into a stiff wind in the first half, Corinthians laid down an early marker, with Cathal O’Shea taking the game to Buccaneers, in every sense of the word, knocking 3 out of the way in a great run up the sideline after 3 minutes. Good carries from Captain Daragh Gardiner and Dec Broderick kept the pressure on the Buccaneers line.

Peadar Tonery tip-toed his way over 2 Buccaneers players on his way to scoring the opening try after 7 minutes that was converted by Kieran Dolan. Buccs replied with a penalty from outhalf Darren Costello. The Corinthians lads were in no mood to relinquish the lead they had enjoyed, after great work by the whole team with sustained pressure and retention of possession, the amazing pace of Billy ‘Whizz’ Casserly stunned the defence (and all those watching) as he broke through for a second home try on 15 minutes for a 12-3 lead. Corinthians 18 – Tuam 3

This Quarter Final which was refixed, was played on Tuesday Night last at 8pm in front of a few hardy souls.

Tuam going for their 3rd Ard Na Cregg Trophy in a row and a looking to complete the League and Cup Double were red hot favourites going into this game.

Corinthians lost Hooker Mitch McGrath prior to kick off with a knee strain, this involved a shuffling of the pack, with Fiachra Tierney coming into the Front Row.

The game was played with all of the ferocity that you would expect of these 2 sets of players, with both sets of forwards trying to see which would break first. The battle hardened campaigners in the Corinthian Pack brought the battle to Tuam, led by Captain Daragh Gardiner, the experienced Englishman (oops sorry Kiwi) Lester Naughton, Peader Tonery and Kelly (I’m a tough B*****d) Ryan.

The physical battle taking its toll in the First Half with the loss of Full Back Mark O’Boyle to injury and being replaced by Mick Berry’s personal Barman in Garavans Joey Devanney. The game was a hard fought Nil- Nil at the break, with Corinthians Winger Kieran Dolan wide of the mark with 2 penalty kicks. [..]
